CGM Open Kickoff Meeting Held

In conjunction with a meeting of the Air Transport Association (ATA) in Springfield, MA, a number of vendors and users of CGM technology met on the evening of 23 September 1997, to explore the possibility of beginning a "CGM Open" vendors group. This meeting was the culmination of discussions held over the preceding year by some vendors of CGM, with the purpose of finding ways to address and resolve CGM interoperability issues, for the common good of the industry at large and the benefit of its CGM users in particular.

The Springfield meeting was attended by 15 CGM vendors and users. It was generally agreed that the use of the CGM standard as well as products and technology based on CGM are poised for potentially rapid growth, and that a CGM trade group could be be a valuable facilitator for the future growth of the industry. The focus of the organization would be to promote the use of CGM, disseminate information, and address interoperability issues that could retard this growth.

The meeting outcomes included:

Among the "initial objectives" is the establishment of a Web site (www.cgmopen.org), and a mail exploder, both of which have now been accomplished.

Participation in CGM Open is, as the name implies, open to anyone with an interest in the promotion and improvement of CGM technology. More details of the Springfield meeting, the list of attendees, and "next steps" may be found in the minutes of that meeting.
