Kavi Mailing List Manager Help

Appendix L. Ezmlm Quick Reference Guide

Important: read before using

This guide to ezmlm-make arguments is designed for quick reference only. It cannot provide definitive information on every mailing list because list behavior is customizable. This caveat especially applies to mailing lists with custom ezmlmrc files. For more information on ezmlm software and the ezmlm-make arguments discussed here, see the ezmlm-make page on the ezmlm-idx website. Note that the arguments presented here may lack the minus sign (-) prefix that is used in the ezmlm help. For example, the argument 'a' in the Kavi Mailing List Manager help and user interface corresponds to '-a' in the official ezmlm-idx help.

Disclaimers

  • Much of the information in this table is specific to the Kavi® environment.

  • It is not always possible to determine the behavior of a list based on the setting of an individual argument because of argument interactions and the application of rules defined in ezmlm-rc. Explanation of these subtleties is outside the scope of this documentation.

  • Some arguments are omitted from this list because they are not exposed through Kavi interfaces.

  • Settings referencing archives generally apply only to the raw mailing list message archives managed by ezmlm-idx. The one exception is instant archiving, which does apply to Web-viewable MHonArc archives.

Table of Ezmlm-make Arguments

Each argument corresponds to a letter of the alphabet, with the lowercase version representing the ezmlm default setting and the uppercase representing the non-default setting. For instance, the arguments -a and -A represent the ezmlm default and non-default settings for the archiving feature, with the default '-a' indicating that ezmlm-idx archiving is enabled.

Table L.2. ezmlm-make Arguments

Switch Description Defaults and usage notes
a Archives enabled.

EZ. KMLM.

These are raw ezmlm-idx archives accessible through ezmlm email commands. Web-based MHonArc archives are created from these archives. Access to raw ezmlm archives is configured in the List Type and access to any Web-based archives is configured independently for each mailing list. Access to the raw ezmlm archives is configured through the ezmlm-make argument's -b/B and -g/G switches.

A No archives. List Types with this setting do NOT have archives.
b Block archives

EZ. KMLM.

Access to raw ezmlm archives via email commands is blocked to all except moderators. Only applies if archiving is enabled (the -a switch is set).

B Do not block raw archives Only applies if archiving is enabled (the -a switch is set) and the level of access depends on the setting of the -g/G switch. If -g is specified, the raw archives are accessible to subscribers as well as moderators. If -G is set, the archives are publicly accessible.
d Enable Digests. EZ. KMLM. When this is enabled, mailing list subscribers have the option of receiving mailing list messages in digest format.
D No digests. This is disallowed in KMLM and raises an error if set directly in the ezmlm-make argument string.
f Prefix added to email message subject line. If set to -f, a prefix is prepended to the subject line. If enabled, the default prefix text is the mailing list name, but Super Admins can edit this value through the Edit Mailing List Text tool.
F No prefix is added to the email subject line. EZ. KMLM.
g Guard the raw ezmlm archives.

KMLM - Private and Closed List Types.

Assuming the -B switch is set so that archive access isn't blocked, subscribers can access the raw ezmlm archives via ezmlm email commands. If the -b switch is set, archive access is blocked so this switch is ignored.

G Do not guard the raw ezmlm archives.

EZ. KMLM - Public List Types only.

Assuming the -B switch is set so that archive access isn't blocked, ezmlm archive retrieval commands are accepted from the public, so anyone can access the raw archives. All Kavi Mailing List Manager default List Types are configured to allow public retrieval of raw archives. If the -b switch is set, archive access is blocked so this switch is ignored.

h Do NOT help subscription. Use of this setting is generally discouraged because it opens lists up to the possibility that an email address can be subscribed by a third party without the email account owner's permission. If this happens, the organization can be accused of spamming and may even be blocklisted.
H Help subscription. EZ. KMLM. Require user opt-in confirmation before fulfilling subscribe requests. Confirmed opt-in is the standard and is highly recommended for all mailing lists.
i Instant archiving. KMLM - All Kavi Mailing List Manager default List Types have instant archiving enabled.
I Periodic archiving. EZ.
j Jump off allowed.
J Jump off NOT allowed. EZ. KMLM. Require user opt-out confirmation before granting user email unsubscribe requests.
k Enable the kill functionality and create a Deny Subscriber List. Messages submitted by senders on this list are deleted without notification. KMLM.
K Do not use the kill function. If the Deny Subscriber List exists, it is ignored. EZ.
l Enable remote retrieval of subscriber lists and ezmlm logs. This presents a potential security vulnerability, so this setting is rarely used.
L Subscriber lists and ezmlm logs can NOT be retrieved remotely. EZ. KMLM.
m Moderate messages sent to this list before posting. KMLM - Set to -m for moderated lists. The -O/o and -U/u and -Y/y switches can modify this argument. If the -mOU combination is used, anyone can post but all posts are moderated. If the -mOuY combination is used, subscribers can post directly but public posts are rejected. When the -mOuy combination (-mOuy) is used, public posts are rejected and subscriber posts are moderated. When the -moU combination is used, only moderators can post and all posts are moderated. For more information, see Default List Types and Posting Access.
M Do NOT moderate messages sent to this list before posting. EZ. KMLM - set to M for unmoderated lists. The -U/u switch modifies this argument. If -U, then anyone can post directly. If -u then subscribers or higher-level users can post directly, but public posts are rejected. List Type options that use this setting: 'Anyone can post (-MU)' and 'Subscribers can post directly but public posts are rejected (-Mu)'. For more information, see Default List Types and Posting Access.
n Allow remote administrators to edit files in dir/text. This presents a potential security vulnerability, so this setting is seldom used.
N Do NOT allow remote administrators to edit files in dir/text. EZ. KMLM.
o Only moderators can post, others rejected. KMLM - set to M for moderator-only posting. This argument only applies to moderated lists (i.e., the -m switch is set). When the -moU combination is used, only moderators can post.
O Others besides moderators can post. EZ. This argument only applies to moderated lists (i.e., the -m switch is set). The -U/u and -Y/y switches can modify this argument. If the -U switch is set, the public is allowed to submit posts for moderation. If the -u switch is set, only subscribers and moderators are allowed to submit posts for moderation, and public posts are automatically rejected. The -y switch is a Kavi customization used to create the mOuy combination that rejects public posts and moderates messages from all other senders. List Type option that uses this setting: 'Anyone can post but all posts moderated (-mOU)', 'Subscribers can post and all others moderated (-mOuY)' and 'Subscribers can post, all others are rejected, and all posts are moderated (mOuy)'.
p Public email subscribe or unsubscribe commands accepted, so users can subscribe to this list via email. KMLM - Set to -p for public List Types such as Public Discussion and Newsletter. This switch works in combination with the -S/s switch. If set to -S, list users can subscribe and unsubscribe directly. If set to -s, subscriptions are moderated so list user subscription requests are subject to moderator approval.
P Private list, doesn't accept any email subscribe or unsubscribe commands. EZ. KMLM - Set to -P for private List Types. If this is set, the -S/s switch is ignored.
q Request address enabled. Respond to email commands in the email Subject: field (rather than just the To: field). This option can be used when transitioning from other mailing list software, so it isn't needed in KMLM.
Q Do NOT process email sent to the request address. EZ. KMLM.
r Remote administration enabled. If remote administration is enabled, moderators can add and remove subscribers via email commands. This can be used for lists with a moderated subscription process. No default List Types use this setting. Instead, a "moderated subscription process" described in Kavi Mailing List Manager documentation refers to mailing lists where this option is disabled to force the subscription process into the more secure realm of webtools, and subscriptions are added through Admin Area tools.
R No remote administration. EZ. KMLM.
s Closed subscription model: list users are allowed to submit ezmlm email subscribe and unsubscribe commands but the requests must be approved by a moderator. EZ. KMLM - Announce Only This switch depends on the -P/p switch setting. It is only enabled if -p is set. If -P is set, the list rejects email subscription commands and this switch is ignored.
S Open subscription model: list users may subscribe and unsubscribe via ezmlm email commands. EZ. KMLM - Set to -S for most default List Types. This switch depends on the -P/p switch setting. It is only enabled if -p is set. If -P is set, the list rejects email subscription commands and this switch is ignored.
t Trailer text enabled.
T Do NOT add trailer text to messages. EZ. KMLM.
u Only allow subscribers to post (i.e., reject public posts). KMLM - List Type options that use this setting: Subscribers can post directly and all others moderated (-mOuY) and Subscribers can post and all others rejected (-Mu).
U Allow anyone to post (i.e., accept public posts). EZ. KMLM - List Type options that use this setting: Anyone can post (-MU), Anyone can post but all posts moderated (-mOUY) and Only moderators can post (-moU).
x Reject MIME type content specified in MIMEREMOVE.
X Allow email and attachments with any MIME type content. EZ. KMLM.
y Customized Kavi Mailing List Manager switch. The -y switch is used to create the -mOuy combination that rejects public posts and moderates messages from all other senders. 'Subscribers can post, all others are rejected, and all posts are moderated (mOuy)'
Y   Don't enable custom -y switch behavior. List Type option that uses this setting: 'Subscribers can post and all others moderated (-mOuY)'.
z   EZ.
Z Enable virus scanning KMLM. This is a customized argument.
