Kavi Mailing List Manager Help

Chapter 45. List Archives

Overview

Use the List Archives tool to access the web-viewable archives for a mailing list. You can only view archives through this tool if the list has archives and users with your subscription type are allowed access to the archives. Assuming you can view the archives, you may click displayed links to have the archives indexed by date, thread, author or subject. View the contents of a specific message and if links are available you may respond to the message (i.e., add a new message to the subject thread) or compose a message on a new subject. If this list is moderated, your message is sent to the moderator for approval. If the list isn't moderated, your message is sent to the mail server to be processed as soon as the mail queue permits.

Note

Mailing list newcomers often use the archives to familiarize themselves with recently posted messages and find out what kind of information is being exchanged through the list. If you are new and want to post a message or question to the list, it is considered good Netiquette to search the archives and read other posts on the subject to see whether your question has already been answered by past discussions.

Use the List Archives tool to:

  • Access archived messages indexed by date, thread, author or subject.

  • View and use available links to respond to a message in the archives or compose a message on a new subject.

How to Use the List Archives Tool

Options

Click the link to index the archives as desired. When you find a message you want to read, click the link for that message and it is displayed in Message View mode. Message View mode allows you to view an individual message, click a link to respond to this message and have your message added to this subject thread (if you are allowed to post messages to this list), or click a link to compose a message on a new subject.

Indexing Options:

The List Archive tool offers four different indexing options you can use to sort and view mailing list archives. Archives are always displayed in monthly batches, regardless of which indexing option is selected. If the month isn't specified, the most recent month's archives are displayed. To navigate to archives for other months, click 'Previous Month' or 'Next Month'.

Dates

Click the Dates link to have archived messages displayed in descending order by date, with the most recent message at the top. If you've navigated to a different month, the last message for that month appears at the top.

Click the Subject link if you want to see the contents of a single message are displayed in Message View mode.

Threads

Click the Threads link to have archived messages indexed by thread. A thread is a set of successive messages on the same subject, so the message that started the thread is displayed at the top of the 'Messages by Thread' box, followed by subsequent messages in the thread in succession, according to the date and time they were posted.

Click the Subject link to go to Message View mode.

Note

The Thread Index view doesn't include the complete set of archived messages because messages that do not receive a reply are not threads, so they don't appear in the threads index.

Authors

Click the Authors link to have archived messages indexed by the author's username (in alphabetical order). Each author's messages are displayed by descending date, so that the most recent message from an author is listed first.

Click the Subject link to go to Message View mode.

Subjects

Click the Subjects link to have archived messages indexed by subject.

Click the author's name link to go to Message View mode.

Message View

Message View mode displays the message you selected, including message header information such as the To: and From: fields, the date of the email, plus the contents (i.e. body) of the email message. Click the Reply to this message link to send an email in response to this message and have your new message added to this thread, or click the Send new message link to send an email on a new subject to this mailing list.

Links that allow you to navigate to other messages in the archives by thread or date are displayed.
