Overview

The Set Maximum Allowed Message Size tool is used to set different message sizes limits for different mailing lists and temporarily raise the limit to allow a specific message to be sent out. This tool gives the organization the opportunity to manage bandwidth consumption at the list level. Message size caps encourage more economical use of bandwidth by preventing users from emailing excessively large attachments. The cap can be raised when the organization decides to make an exception for a particular message, then set back to a lower level after this message goes through.

Note

When files are attached to email, they are encoded as text, which inflates the size. For example, a file that is 3.8 MB (megabytes) on your local file server may creep over the 5 MB limit after base 64 encoding.

Use the Set Maximum Allowed Message Size tool to:

Set different message sizes limits for different mailing lists.
Temporarily raise the message sizes cap to allow a large message to be distributed through a mailing list.

How to Set Maximum Allowed Message Size

Select

Your organization's mailing lists are displayed to provide an overview of the maximum message sizes set for the different lists, the number of subscribers on each list and the type of list. You can use the search tool to search for a mailing list by name or change the number of results displayed on each page. You can also sort the displayed mailing lists by name, type or max message size. Select the list whose maximum message size you want to adjust, then click Select.

Fields:

List Name: The name of the mailing list.
List Type: The List Type on which this mailing list's configuration is based.
Maximum Message Size: The current maximum message size in megabytes (MB). The default is 5 MB.
Number of Subscribers: The number of email addresses subscribed to this mailing list.

Set Size

The recommended message size for a list with this number of subscribers is displayed for reference. If you want to return to the previous step, press Back. When you are ready, set the maximum message size as desired and click Save.
